Title:Laminated Acoustic Window
Publication Type:Grant
Publication Date:Nov 15, 1960
Filing Date:Jun 6, 1946
Inventors:Edwin M. McMillan
Original Assignee:Edwin M. McMillan
Abstract:This invention is directed at transmitting sound waves through more than one flat plates. The state of the art was to use a thin single plate. This invention uses multiple very thin plates to achieve a wall that can a) transmit sound waves over a wide angular range; b) is highly transparent to high frequency sound; and c) is thick enough to have considerable strength.

Title:Electronuclear Reactor
Publication Type:Grant
Publication Date:Apr 19, 1960
Filing Date:Jul 11, 1958
Inventors:Alvarez Luis W, Lawrence Ernest O, Mcmillan Edwin M
Original Assignee:Alvarez Luis W, Lawrence Ernest O, Mcmillan Edwin M
Abstract:This invention is a device to make nuclear energy available for commercial quantities. Linear accelerators can be used to accelerate charged particles to high energy, and directing those particles onto a suitable target causes a nuclear reaction. This invention utilizes a high-current accelerator to produce a high-energy beam. Previous accelerators were not designed for commercial use and used significantly less current.

Title:Cloverleaf Cyclotron
Publication Type:Grant
Publication Date:Feb 3, 1959
Filing Date:Apr 12, 1956
Inventors:David L. Judd, Edwin M. McMillan
Original Assignee:David L. Judd, Edwin M. McMillan
Abstract:This invention is a cyclotron with a unique magnetic field configuration where the field increases in intensity with radius. As particles approach the speed of light their mass increases and they fall out of phase with the alternating electric field of the cyclotron. The instant invention compensates for relativistic mass increase of particles by providing a magnetic field that increases in intensity as particle orbit radiates from the center of the system, thereby maintaining axial stability of the particle beam..

Title:Target structure for color television display tubes
Publication Type:Grant
Publication Date:Oct 29, 1957
Filing Date:Oct 18, 1954
Inventors:Edwin M. McMillan
Original Assignee:Chromatic Television Lab Inc.
Abstract:This invention relates to a target structure for use in cathode ray tubes used for displaying color on a television. Electrons are accelerated in the cathode ray tube and collide with a target releasing colored phosphors. This device is an improved target comprises a grid of closely spaced, parallel linear conductors tightly stretched and mounted adjacent to the display screen, in combination with a conducting coating on the screen.

Title:Electronic Switch
Publication Type:Grant
Publication Date:Jan 19, 1954
Filing Date:an 22, 1944
Inventors:Edwin M. McMillan
Original Assignee:Edwin M. McMillan
Abstract:This invention is an electronic switch that enables simultaneous or alternate measurement of the output of poly-channel multiplex by successively connecting the various channels to a recording instrument. Generally speaking, this invention is the electronic equivalent of a rotary switch.

Title:Accelerator Target
Publication Type:Grant
Publication Date:Jun 2, 1953
Filing Date:Jun 5, 1951
Inventors:Edwin M. McMillan
Original Assignee:Atomic Energy Commission
Abstract:This device allows cyclic particle accelerators to produce wide beams of high energy x-rays. This invention allows a thick target to be used in place of a narrow target and allowed for thick targets to be inserted into a target particle’s orbit without disrupting the orbits of adjacent particles.

Title:Method of and apparatus for accelerating to high energy electrically charged particles
Publication Type:Grant
Publication Date:Jan 6, 1953
Filing Date:May 3, 1946
Inventors:Edwin M. McMillan
Original Assignee:Edwin M. McMillan
Abstract:The invention relates to achieving the acceleration of ions to speeds approaching the speed of light by using a magnetic resonance accelerator, i.e. a cyclotron. The cyclotron consists primarily of a large electromagnet with circular poles, a vacuum chamber and two electrodes that alternate in potential. The cyclotron was limited by the fact that at high speeds particles increase in mass relatively, and thus the particles would fall out of phase with the oscillator and slow to a stop. The instant invention, i.e. “synchrotron”, overcomes this limitation by varying magnetic field and holding the frequency of the electric field constant.

The cyclotron was limited by the fact that at high speeds particle mass increases relatively, and thus particles would fall out of phase with the electric field and slow to a stop. The instant invention can achieve much higher particle speeds than the cyclotron by holding the magnetic field constant and varying the frequency of the electric field. In sum, this invention combines the synchrotron (US2624841A) with the cyclotron (US1948384).
