Martin Luther King Jr. stated that he would give “every penny” of his winnings towards the Civil Rights movement, according to the New York Times. King stated that he wanted to donate the money because he believes the world is behind Civil Rights. In 2005, there was controversy around Martin Luther King Jr.’s children fighting over whether or not to sell the physical Nobel medal for money.
